Edendale Up Close presents Judicanti Responsura , Saturday November 23, 2024 at 12:00 noon in the Edendale Library community room Join us Saturday November 23rd at noon-1 pm for our next Edendale Up Close performance – Judicanti Responsura , featuring tubaist William Roper and percussionist Joseph Mitchell. The ensemble was formed in 1984 and is focused on music of our time, with a special emphasis on compositions that incorporate African American improvisational traditions. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by its members, commissioned works, jazz standards and contemporary classical compositions.  Judicanti Responsura 's members were raised in Los Angeles' African American neighborhoods and were politicized by the experience. Much of their music reflects that politicalization in its inspiration, titles, content, wardrobe and performance venues. The ensemble welcomes special guest violist Cassia Streb.     Edendale Up Close presents Fiato Quartet,  Saturday Sept. 7th at 12:00 noon-1:00 pm in the Edendale Library community room For our next Edendale Up Close concert, Saturday Sept. 7th at 12:00 noon, we are excited to welcome the Fiato Quartet – violinists Carrie Kennedy and Joel Pargman, violist Aaron Oltman, and cellist Ryan Sweeney . They will perform a program entitled “American Harmonies: A Journey through Time and Tradition”,  including Florence Price’s arrangements of gospel folk songs in counterpoint, Coleridge Taylor Perkinson’s “Calvary” String Quartet No. 1, and pieces by George Walker and Jessie Montgomery. Fiato Quartet, winner of the 2022 Beverly Hills National Auditions, was formed in 2008. In addition to their acclaimed work as Fiato, they are also members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Pasadena Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, New West Symphony, and Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra. Please note: THIS CONCERT BEGINS at 2:00 p.m.   Edendale Up Close Concert, Saturday July 13th at 2:00 p.m.  Ranchera ‘22 performs synthesizer interpretations of the songs of José Alfredo Jiménez For our next Edendale Up Close concert, we are excited to present Ranchera ‘22 (Aaron MF Olson and ensemble), performing synthesizer interpretations of the songs of legendary singer-songwriter José Alfredo Jiménez, whose work starting in the 1940s helped create the ranchera style of Mexican music. This is the space-age bachelor pad version, and I promise you it is delightful! Ranchera ‘22 is the brainchild of my friend Aaron MF Olson, who in addition to working at the Silverlake Branch Library, is a multi-instrumentalist who leads many forward-thinking musical projects including L.A. PLEASE NOTE: this concert begins at NOON. Saturday May 4th 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.   PT   We are excited to present Calico Winds for our next Edendale Up Close Concert. Eileen Holt (flute)  Catherine Del Russo (oboe)  Kathryn Nevin (clarinet)  Theresa Treuenfels (bassoon)  and Rachel Berry (horn)  will perform  the joyful single movement Wind Quintet by Manny Mendelson ,  followed by Robert Muczynski ’s edgy and animated Quintet for Winds.  The program will culminate with a world premiere performance  of Jeremy Gilien ’s Woodwind Quintet;  its three movements are descriptively entitled Melodica, Meditation and Merrymaking.: Playing around with a melodica (a small keyboard played by blowing air through a mouthpiece) provided the initial inspiration for this piece, although for years I had wanted to write something for this versatile combination of instruments which is so capable of producing the most kaleidoscopic colors.   The first movement,  Melodica,  begins with a jaunty the
