Friday, March 12th at 2:30 p.m. PST on Zoom

Join us for a live concert of music for hurdy-gurdy (vielle) and harpsichord

by Curtis Berak and Maksim Velichkin!

They will perform works by Chedeville and Corrette, and improvisations.

The performance will be followed by a Q&A,

for the audience to learn more about the hurdy-gurdy!

We are very excited to be able to continue our Edendale Up Close series

(which we used to present live at the library) online, and we hope you can attend.

ARTIST BIOS:

Curtis Berak has had a passion for the vielle, or hurdy gurdy, for over twenty years, performing, restoring, and collecting antique vielles from the early 18th century, amassing the largest collection in America. He has made a concert tour of Ireland, and played on film soundtracks of Polar Express, The Three Musketeers, The Craft, The Tie That Binds, and Newsies. Curtis also builds and restores harpsichords and fortepianos, which are rented by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, L. A. Opera, Musica Angelica and many other ensembles for performances in Southern California. 

Maksim Velichkin is an accomplished cellist, pianist, and harpsichordist who has been active as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra artist among an international circle featuring venerable conductors and headlining classical stars. He has worked with James Levine, Kurt Masur, Charles Dutoit, Yuri Temirkanov, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Gabor Takacs-Nagy, Sarah Chang, Masaaki Suzuki, Maxim Vengerov, Yuri Bashmet, Andras Schiff, Bobby McFerrin, Joshua Bell, Martha Argerich, Gabriela Montero, Renaud Capucon, Lynn Harrell, Misha Maisky, Frans Helmerson, Sergey Babayan as well as many others. Maksim’s performances have been featured on Radio Suisse Romande, WQED FM in Pittsburgh, National Radio and Television of Uzbekistan. Moreover, as an improviser and interpreter of contemporary and popular music Maksim’s performance and recording career includes credits with Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Billy Childs, Burt Bacharach, Bobby McFerrin, Dwight Trible, Bitter:Sweet, Chris Botti, Bob James, Josh Groban, Red Elvises, Bernadette Peters, Natalie Cole, Alan Silvestri, Richard Thompson and many others. He performs and tours frequently with the Verbier Chamber Orchestra throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

  Back at the Edendale branch on Thursday May 25th at 5 p.m., we will have our first in-person Edendale Up Close concert in our meeting room in a long while!   We’ve been doing them on Zoom since 2020, excited to get back to having live music in the library.  Maksim Velichkin will perform music for solo cello, from baroque to contemporary composers: Gabrieli, delAbaco, Reger, Bach, and more. He is an accomplished cellist, pianist and harpsichordist who has been active as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra artists both here in California and internationally.
